Student athletes at LHS are always on the move, whether it is driving from school to practice or from practice to school, and everything in between. Because of this busy schedule, student-athletes can feel overwhelmed by school and their sports.
“Balancing school and practice is busy and stressful,” said freshman Max Rabin.
Part of what these student athletes do to balance their academics with their sports is time management. Many have to set aside time in the day to decompress or relax to stay present when practicing their sport or staying productive at school.
“I work on my time management skills to make sure I get all my work done while still doing well in my sports,” said a sophomore Jackson Romero.
While being a student-athlete can be challenging, as with many things, there are benefits and outcomes. LHS athletes, when asked, “How will being a student athlete help you later in life?” commonly replied that their complex, busy schedules would help them manage their time better and regulate stress more easily.
“It will help me with time management and make sure I go to the gym and stay fit, but do all my work as well,” said senior Jaslyn Reed.
Even though these athletes always put school and sports first, they also need to find time to do what they want. While school and sports are fun, they need to bring more happiness into their lives to support their mental well-being.
“On the weekends that I don’t have sports, I try to hang out with friends,” said sophomore Emerson Burley.
This answer was common among all the athletes interviewed. No specific place was mentioned; they just wanted to be with their friends. Showing how special some quality time with some friends can be after a busy week of setting, shooting, kicking, and homework can be.
Another common consensus was that Lakeridge athletes do prioritize their sports over their schoolwork. Even though this was true, they all followed up by saying that they will never let their schoolwork go undone.
Overall, student athletes at LHS are the best of the best, whether that comes to being the greatest athlete they can be or earning that 4.0 GPA.
