Boys baseball is looking to “run” to state as they close out their season. Ranked No. 13 in state for 6A schools, the varsity team holds a 14-12 record.
Last year the team finished with 11-16 and the year before that saw a 13-15 record.
“The difference between this year and last year is that this year we have a lot more team chemistry,” said center field Andrew Ha. “We’re a lot more focused and engaged with the game. Throughout the whole season everyone’s been saying they can see that and they can feel that.”
Baseball finished their league games with three consecutive wins against Oregon City.
Within the TRL, the team’s league position has shifted around a lot, ranging from No. 2 to No. 4, ending at No. 3. Outfield/pitcher Rylan Metz gave insight about why placement can be so variable.
“Sometimes you keep hitting at the right time, and you just string hits along and sometimes the balls are coming and you just can’t do that,” said Metz. “But there’s no doubt all these guys are incredible players.”
As this season nears its conclusion, many athletes start wondering about the next one.
“The [next] team’s pretty young,” said Ha. “We have six sophomores starting right now. So it’ll be a good young team that’ll be developing well.”
Over spring break the team went down to California for a series of non-league games.
“We played a team called Summit, they’re supposed to be the top dogs out there,” said Metz. “We had Johnny King pitching, and he throws an amazing game, and he and some of the boys were able to string some of those hits I was talking about… we played the game we knew how to play and we beat them 2-0. We kept that other team that should’ve been really loud, really quiet.”
Baseball continues through May as the team begins playing in the state bracket.
