Are American high schools just like in the movies? That’s the expectation every exchange student has. After a few weeks of being here in the US, I as an Estonian exchange student have seen how different everything is- the subjects, teachers, dress code, food and students.
I had no idea what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised how fun it is at LHS. The teachers and students are very welcoming and sociable. The biggest difference is definitely the subjects.
I like that students have the freedom to choose subjects while also taking core classes. My biggest highlights have definitely been the football games. Being on PDT has given me the opportunity to dance at halftimes which I am really grateful for. I’m looking forward to what this school year has in store and excited to meet new people.
Exchange student Mia Neff is from Germany. She chose to study in the US because of the school differences between Europe and the US. She thinks that schools have more spirit and less classes here, Neff has been loving her electives like Culinary Arts and the A capella Choir.
Friday football games and homecoming are something Neff has never experienced before.
“High school or general school experiences like this don’t exist in my home country,” she said.
Being a cheerleader at LHS is one of the most quintessentially American things and since Neff was already familiar with tumbling and stunting, she decided to join the LHS cheer team. She, like other exchange students, is looking forward to the whole year and hopes to make life-long connections.
