As LHS students prepare for next year, they are filling their schedules with a variety of classes. Many students in the midst of APs and other challenging classes are looking for an “Easy A” to keep up their GPA, fulfill their graduation requirements, and have a good time learning with less pressure to maintain a grade.
Through speaking to many students and teachers, I have made a list of some of the “Easiest A’s” at LHS.
First, Culinary Arts. Not only do students find this class to be stress-free, but they also love it and say they learn valuable life skills in it.
“I would agree that Culinary One is easy to get an A in. You just must show up to class and try your best with hands-on learning. That would just apply to culinary one, though Culinary 3 is a college-level course that focuses on entrepreneurship and is much harder,” said culinary teacher Jennifer Jillions.
The next class fills in your 2nd P.E credit and fills your day with peace: Mindfulness and yoga. The class is split in half, with half the class doing yoga in the gym and the other learning the mindfulness curriculum, which incorporates journaling, doing mantras, and even playing with kinetic sand.
“Students like it because you can breathe and let stress leave at the door. The goal is to learn how to self-regulate and be present. It’s an easy A because all you have to do is show up and participate: There’s no homework and a final post survey!” said Yoga teacher Bethany Nedrow
Last but definitely not least is Andrew Balnik’s Film Studies. This class is about 70% watching movies and 30% analyzing movies and discussing them. If you love movies, you will likely love this class.
Balnik agrees that it can be an easy A, but not always. Not when students don’t enjoy movies and don’t do the work.
“I think easy A is a bit of a misnomer: if you watch the movies and respond to the movies, you will not get an A, but if you don’t, you won’t. I’ve been teaching this class for 10 years, and multiple people simply have not done the work, leading to them not passing: students who already like movies don’t see the hard aspect of it because they already enjoy movies and see what I’m trying to get them to see,” said Balnik
When asked, students who shared that the class was an “Easy A ” shared that they found it easy because of the lack of tests and homework. Also, because the class work was fun and interesting, they were easily motivated to get it done.
“I liked film studies a lot, and I never really had to worry about my grade or studying for any test or doing homework: Just watching movies that were usually really good and analyzing/talking about them,” said sophomore Linnea Brown
LHS offers lots of fun, stress-free classes alongside the challenging ones. As you schedule your following years, try to make some room for the classes that students find easy and interesting.
