Gen Z has become movie theaters’ new savior, becoming the largest movie going generation in recent years.
According to Fandango’s study, movie theaters are seeing a revival in attendance from younger demographics. Listing by generation, 87% of Gen Z and 82% of millennials saw at least one movie theatrically in the past 12 months, compared with 70% of Gen X and 58% of baby boomers.
This major uptick in moviegoing can mainly be attributed to the younger generations’ want for social interaction and an escape from the formula, plus a general want for people to get out of the house.
“I love going to the theatres especially with friends,” said sophomore Anni Eriksson. “I think the last movie I went to was the most recent Avatar movie, it was good though.”
This moviegoing trend is thought to grow even more this 2026 summer, with many new movies releasing. This includes original pieces and returning franchises like “Supergirl” (June 26), “The Odyssey” (July 17) and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” (July 31).
“I think the movie I’m most excited for is ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ the trailer was really good.” said Eriksson.
So with this blockbuster summer be sure to check out your local theatres for new movies to see, as it’s a super simple way to spend time with friends or family.
