Over the last few months, the drama department has been working on a student-led project, directed by seniors Violet Lempert and Mathew Parker Smith. The pair have been acting in the Lakeridge drama department for years, and for their last project before they graduate, they decided to take on a different role.
Working as directors now, they are the masterminds behind the scouting, stage directing and teaching of the freshman and sophomore actors participating in their new play. The pair has worked for months to make the experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible, but it’s impossible not to feel a little tense.
“It’s one of those things where you’re super nervous, and it all comes together in the end, it clicks,” said Lempert. “Honestly, it’s been incredible to watch the kids evolve as performers.” According to the directors, it was really difficult to find a role for everyone, so some cuts had to happen, but all students were allowed to try out and many found ways to participate, even creating new roles so that students could be involved.
“Everyone is so supportive of each other, especially this year, when someone makes a breakthrough, everyone is very excited and proud, it’s really nice to see,” said Smith.
The positive environment was a huge part of what made the play progress so well, and students are super excited to show off their hard work.
