At LHS, honor societies allow students the opportunity to be recognized for their academic achievements while also encouraging leadership, service and engagement.
These organizations bring together students who are committed to scholarship and allow them to use their talents to support both their peers and the wider community.
The National Honor Society is one of the most prominent academic organizations. The four pillars of their membership are scholarship, leadership, service and character.
Outside of maintaining a strong academic standing (3.5 GPA or above), NHS members are expected to help the community through volunteer work.
Students must complete 10 service hours for the school, along with another 10 outside of school.
These service requirements show the emphasis that success should be translated into your daily life, not just in the classroom.
LHS also offers several subject-specific honor societies that allow students to deepen their involvement in academic fields.
The French National Honor Society, formally known as the Société Honoraire de Français, allows students to express their linguistic and cultural achievements throughout their time learning French.
To join, students must have received an A for three semesters in a row.
“It’s a really interesting and exciting experience,” said French teacher Amy Ryan. “Every year we help people in developing countries with microloans through Kiva, and it’s both interesting and rewarding because you can see the success those people have with their businesses.”
Similarly, the Chinese National Honor Society honors students who have shown dedication to learning Chinese within the school. To join, students must have at minimum three semesters of Chinese and maintain a B or higher during their time.
Students in Spanish language classes have the opportunity to join the Spanish National Honor Society if their GPA is above 3.0 and they take Spanish 4 by senior year.
Over the next few months, induction ceremonies will begin for these honor societies as a way to formally welcome new members.
Through this, their hard work and dedication will be recognized, and they will have the ability to show their academic achievements to all.
