February might be the shortest month of the year, but it still manages to pack in plenty of strange and unexpected celebrations. From oddly specific food holidays to completely random traditions, this month’s weird holidays calendar gives students a few fun reasons to break out of their usual routines.
Some holidays are surprisingly relatable, like Read in the Bathtub Day, which encourages people to slow down and relax, although maybe not without being careful around the water.
Others, like Pork Rind Appreciation Day and National Cabbage Day, celebrate foods most students probably don’t think about much, but they’re weird enough to start conversations anyway.
Not all February holidays are purely silly. Darwin Day, celebrated on February 12, honors scientist Charles Darwin and his contributions to the theory of evolution. While it may sound more academic than quirky, it still stands out as an unusual way to celebrate science and curiosity.
Pop culture also gets its moment with National Pokémon Day, a highlight for students who grew up playing the games or collecting cards.
Then there are holidays like Extraterrestrial Culture Day and Inconvenience Yourself Day, which don’t totally make sense but prove that not every celebration needs a serious purpose; sometimes the random ones are the most fun.
