He likes ranch on his pizza, eats it Detroit-style and he’s more than ready to gobble up the role of principal for LHS… Meet Kevin Mills. His parents were educators — his dad was a principal and his mom was a teacher. Growing up, pursuing a job in education felt natural.
He brings over With over 17 years of teaching experience to LHS.,
He graduated from Linfield College with a bachelor’s degree in math before, and he earned a master’s in education from George Fox University.
Once he graduated, he kicked off his career as an advanced math teacher, then athletic director, before moving on to head baseball coach at West Linn High School and finally becoming the principal for 10 years there.
His last job before moving to LHS was serving as a principal at Lake Oswego Middle School for the last eight years.
Now enough about his history; he also has several hobbies he enjoys.
His go-to music is very seasonal. When snow falls, he’s pumping out indie folk music, but when the sun is shining, he rolls with calm country classics. When he’s feeling active, he likes to kick out a soccer ball, but he enjoys traveling to new places and spending time with his family the most.
That family is his wife Katie and his 11-year-old twins, Dominic and Sydney, whom he is enjoying watching as they grow into capable and exciting people. As for LHS, Mills has a few plans. One tradition that he wants to see continue at LHS is the student involvement with programs and school events.
He really wants to let the kids dictate how traditions at this school flow and watch them take the initiative.
“Student voice is really important. If we continue to do the same things because we’ve done them before without hearing the kids, then we’re not doing it right,” said Mills.
A huge advocate for student voice and expression, he’s more than ready to take on the responsibilities of principal.
He leaves the students of LHS with a message:
“I want the kids to know that I’m very student centered and I enjoy building relationships with students and staff. I want them to feel comfortable talking to me because ultimately that’s the best way to get to know everybody.”
You can find Mills around the donut at lunch and working hard in his office during class. He’s more than happy to chat with any curious students.
