One of the lesser-known sports our school has to offer is bowling. It’s a small team with few staff members, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t loved by its team any less than other LHS sports.
Senior Kalani Woods Matanza is an aspiring bowler who started playing in his freshman year after a shocking realization that basketball was not in his future.
While bowling seems simple in concept, LHS bowlers have to practice a lot to compete at the schoolwide level.
“There are a lot of nuances that people don’t really understand; there is a lot of physics that goes into it,” said Kalani.
According to Kalani, bowling isn’t just about knocking over pins and racking up points; it’s about understanding the flow of the lane and using a perfect mix of spin, weight and velocity to get that desired strike.
Above the semantics of the game itself, the team energy and overall chemistry are a huge part of what makes bowling worthwhile.
“Three words I would use to describe the sport are ‘inclusive,’ ‘lighthearted’ and ‘genuine,’” said Kalani.
