“Leaving Iowa” is taking the stage at LHS as the 2026 winter play. Opening on Feb. 19, this lively production is close to being put into action with the devotion of the cast and crew.
This play follows Don Browning’s journey through Iowa to find a proper resting place for his father while revisiting old memories of family road trips along the way. The story explores themes of nostalgia and family dynamics through its comedic journey. Since the auditions in December, the cast has been working hard on putting the play together.
“It isn’t played as often,” said drama teacher Andrew Balnik regarding the play. “I wanted to choose a comedy, and this play is funny.”
The play gives both the audience and the cast a sense of familiarity as it goes through the journey of family dynamics. Its humorous roles are easy to relate to.
“I think of myself as a comedic person, so I feel like I resonate with my character a lot,” said junior Kevin Kelleher, who plays Don Browning’s father, seen in a series of flashback memories to family road trips.

“I’m looking forward to Lakeridge watching it because it’s a comedy,” said junior Connor Bradley, who took on the narrating role of Don Browning.
The adventurous family road trip that appears in Don Browning’s memories on his journey through Iowa is not only funny and memorable, but it is also an experience that many can relate to. It reminds some viewers of their chaotic yet nostalgic childhood road trips with their families.
“The experiences in the play remind me of my family road trips,” said senior Nora Duncan, who plays Don Browning’s mother. “I’m excited for Lakeridge to see the characters and the emotion.”
The production also has a strong and dedicated crew that is continuing to work to carry out the play. Their behind-the-scenes work, from sound and lights to makeup tie the production together.
Written by Midwesterns Tim Clue and Spike Manton, “Leaving Iowa” made its world premiere in 2004. It was written to be a relatable and funny play that captures a universal childhood experience of road trips.
