Phrases like “the male loneliness epidemic” and “chronically single” seem to pop up everywhere; from the hallways to the internet, it seems like everyone is single right now. With so many people seemingly looking for love, it should be easy to find a partner, right?
When most people think about finding a romantic partner, they look to the internet for help. In an age where communication is as easy as the click of a button, going from single to taken is easier than ever, or so it seems.
For many, Snapchat and Instagram are common ways of meeting new people, but some say it doesn’t really work.
“I would much rather meet somebody in person,” said junior Sadie Brix. “Online dating kind of sucks.”
From the lack of real-life connection to DMs void of emotion, dating online lacks the components of a real relationship, making many turn away from using the internet to create connections. In addition, teens say that using online platforms like Snapchat sends the message that you don’t really want to “date” anyone or that it attracts uncommitted people.
“The odds aren’t very high,” said junior Sam Hogge. “Snapchat is for people who don’t actually want a relationship.”
Most people say this is because of the hook-up culture formed on snapchat, or the casual nature of the app.
In addition to these drawbacks, there is always the danger of catfishing online. People can present themselves as completely different than who they really are and even take advantage of people online. It is increasingly difficult to tell real from fake online, and the risks of interacting with people you don’t know in real life are growing.
The inherent dangers of online dating, as well as the lack of people who actually want to date someone, make the internet an unhelpful way to find “the one.” People want to make real human connections, without the nonchalant approach to relationships that comes with social media.
In an age where everything is digital, it’s easier to just set down the phone and focus on real life connections. You never know, one day you might meet someone.
