It seems absurd that Robert Irwin, an Australian conservationist, would be winning an international dance competition. However, it was possible on the show Dancing With the Stars (DWTS). DWTS is a reality dance competition show where 16 celebrities, or “stars,” are paired with professional ballroom dancers. The pairs compete for 11 weeks in a live show, with the grand prize being the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy.
This season of DWTS brought in unprecedented numbers in viewing and voting, with a record breaking 72 million votes cast for the finale.
“This season has boomed because of the connection with the younger crowd on TikTok, with Alix Earle being a star and a couple dances going viral online,” said math teacher Patrick Gregg.
One of the most enjoyable parts for fans is getting involved by predicting their favorites to win.
“I’d say Alix is the favorite to win. I picked Robert episode one, but have been rooting for Jordan Chiles all season,” said Gregg.
The fans are an important part of the show and their opinions have weight, with voting by text or online accounting for half of the decision on who gets sent home each week.
In fact, DWTS has a loyal fan base, carrying them through 20 years and 34 seasons of family-friendly television.
“I started watching it with my dad a few years ago, and we’ve been watching it together for so long that it’s just a ritual,” said senior Lindsey Lyons.
Between the glamor, fun and family of DWTS, it’s no surprise the show is so popular. Tuning in every Tuesday at 8 p.m. on ABC, following along on TikTok, or even attending the DWTS Tour, fans can engage and cheer for their favorite couples each new season.
