The Link Crew program comes to LHS with a total of 67 leaders stepping in to aid freshmen in their transition to high school. It is a North American student leadership program that directs its focus on community-building, leadership, and peer mentorship to aid freshmen in their transition into high school.
“It helps build community,” said junior Emily Paul. “It’s a great way to introduce high school on a more personal level.”
Link Crew is a student-based program where juniors and seniors guide incoming freshmen through their first year in high school, providing them with insight into high school life and establishing a foundation of people to turn to for help. The program consists of freshman being given a tour of the campus for their first day, as well as being given important information about LHS High School.
In addition, they partake in interactive games with their link crew leaders to strengthen bonds with their leaders and group. This opportunity allows freshmen to familiarize themselves with the school grounds as well as other high school students, giving them a comfortable launch into the start of their high school experience.
“Link Crew helped me get to know my way around the school and made me feel very welcomed to the school,” said freshman Mia Wallace. “It helped calm my nerves about starting freshman year.”
Not only is Link Crew helpful in aiding freshmen, but it is also a great way to volunteer and is an amazing leadership opportunity for upperclassmen. At the end of each school year, rising juniors and seniors are given the chance to apply to be a Link Crew leader and have the chance to earn 14 total hours of community service towards their graduation requirements by doing Link Crew. Applications can be found on the said class’s “Counseling Class” via Google Classroom in the month of April, as well as from the National Honors Society and volunteering clubs.
Accepted applicants will participate in frequent training sessions during the summer to prepare them for their leadership position in the coming school year. In these few sessions, the leaders run through the games they will play with their group and discuss rules and ways to help provide the best experience.
Throughout the school year, link crew leaders attend their group’s Pace Time class every once in a while to teach the freshmen new study habits, how to be involved at school through clubs and friends, and more valuable lessons that may come in handy.
