Fall is upon us and so is the volunteering season. Many local organizations have a greater need for volunteers, making it a prime time for students in Key Club and National Honor Society to get a jump on their hours. Volunteering earlier in the year also helps students avoid conflicting schedules during the busy winter months.
Here at LHS, the Halloween fair, hosted by the freshman class ASB officers, is a great way to support our school directly. The fair will be Oct. 25, from 1-3 p.m. The event is for local elementary schoolers, with different Halloween-themed activities like games and costume contests.
“We welcome and are grateful to any and all students who are willing to help,” said Josephine Richards, a freshman ASB officer.
She added that it is a great way to get involved and gain volunteer hours for NHS and Key Club. Students who like working with children are encouraged to volunteer, as well as students with child care experience.
If you’re looking for volunteer opportunities outside of LHS, the West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta in Tualatin is an annual event hosted on Oct. 19. Volunteers are needed to help with games, face painting, set up,
tear down and more. The Regatta is a great way to gain volunteer hours while also having fun. You can sign up at the Hands On Greater Portland website or the Tualatin city website.
These are just a handful of opportunities available, and many more will be scheduled closer to the end of the calendar year. Hands on Portland is a great place to look for volunteer opportunities, as are the Lake Oswego and other local city websites.
