The halls of LHS are familiar territory: They are lined with lockers, echoing with foot traffic, and ever-bustling between classes. However, for seniors, there’s one accessory that stands out more than a cap and gown: the senior backpack.
From Paw Patrol to Dora the Explorer, LHS seniors have changed the backpack game tremendously this year. The newfound trend appeared in the early 2000s and has subtly crept its way into the LHS corridors, bringing smiles to students’ faces as they see their childhood cartoons on people’s backs.
Many seniors trade in their practical, everyday bags for something more expressive, whether it be cartoon characters, vintage prints, or quirky designs that reflect their childhood or unique style. For some, it’s a way to stand out and celebrate their final year; for others, it’s a reminder of where they started.
“I can feel my aura and my swag just dripping,” said senior Cyrus Fitzgerald with his Hello Kitty backpack.
On the other hand, these backpacks come with trade-offs. They’re often less durable or practical, especially with the demands of senior classes. Still, most agree that the personal meaning outweighs the inconvenience.
“My Paw Patrol backpack is much smaller, has fewer pockets, and is much more colorful compared to my old backpack,” said senior Brock Bayless.
“However, I feel cooler than someone who doesn’t have a special backpack. It’s definitely worth it.”
