The second round of B-wing renovations, including updated classrooms and two new glass-walled rooms, have been completed over the summer. Classrooms B26, B28, B30 and B32 were remodeled, including new cabinets, lab tables and floors. The storerooms were also updated.
“I’ve been enjoying the new lab tables,” said Matthew Price, physics teacher. “They’re more flexible in a lot of ways, although I haven’t had to try to put them out of the way yet.”
Two glass-walled rooms have replaced the original 26 ¾ room. They come with improvements to the facilities including micropipettes, gel electrophoresis machines, sinks, gas supply and a fridge. One of the rooms is currently used by Advanced Biosciences students.
“We use them because Mr. Briggs has another class in his main classroom, Intro to Biotechnology, during our period of Advanced Biosciences,” said senior Sophia Lindsay. “So we use it as a lab.”
The additional rooms support student research and internship projects by giving them a space to work without distractions.
“We do a lot of work with E. coli, and we don’t want people to kill it, so we’ll have our own space with it, where people won’t touch it, because it’s really hard to keep alive,” said Lindsay.
New equipment like microwaves and glassware may also be added in the future. Currently, Advanced Biosciences students occupy only one of the rooms.
