Do you happen to notice that the quality of your item from Shein seems to disintegrate after a couple trips in the washing machine? Yet, do you continue to buy from the same shop because the clothes are just such a good deal?
This is a great depiction of fast fashion. It gets you hooked and makes you want to buy more, when really, you’re just wasting money and textile. The waste of the clothes feeds into textile waste which clogs landfills, ultimately detrimental towards the environment.
“Fast fashion is bad for the environment,” said Sarah Agan, a senior.
A study done at Princeton on fast fashion shows that it is responsible for around 10% of global CO2 emissions.
The material is such low quality, it is constantly being wasted, feeding into global warming. When you have to throw out one pair of shorts, you feel the need to buy another and throw it out again.
“I usually try to go to open houses and garage sales, or the bins with friends,” said Dominic Bender, a senior.
Online fast fashion shops like Shein, Zara and Temu are feeding into global warming by the amount of CO2 emissions. When shopping online, try to notice when clothes are cheaper than normal and appear artificial. Going forward, teens should find other places to shop like the bins or garage sales instead of fast fashion.
