LHS has become synonymous with the word “scandal,” with recent articles mentioning the school featuring headlines such as “Counselor at Lake Oswego school under investigation” or “High school counselor in Lake Oswego subject of investigations, following abrupt retirement of principal.”
These articles and a lack of explanation from the school district aside from a press release by Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Schiele sent out on Dec. 9 that explained that the district was “unable to share additional details” has led to an overwhelming number of questions and an absence of answers for students and community members alike.
“It has added a sense of unease to our school environment,” said senior Leo Ibser. “I don’t know who to go to right now anymore for counseling because my counselor had given me a lot of support the past three years.”
However, the minimal answers have been due to the rights to confidentiality that school district employees have.
“There are limits on what can be shared publicly regarding personnel matters,” said Executive Director of Human Resources Donna Watson. “The district may not comment on the details of a personnel matter.”
Employees have rights to whether or not they discuss why they are leaving, similar to how students who transfer schools do not have to provide reasoning. The district is unable to comment on the situation because it is protected under employment law.
However, the omission of answers has created rampant speculation throughout the community, creating outlandish rumors and conspiracies to attempt to explain the situation.
“We encourage our community to be cautious with rumors. Much of what circulates is speculation, and it can cause unnecessary worry. While we may not be able to share details, we can say this: concerns raised are taken seriously and addressed through the appropriate processes,” said Watson.
