The Portland Trail Blazers have been sent reeling after head coach Chauncy Billups was arrested on Oct. 25 in a federal gambling investigation linking him to a mafia-backed poker and sports-betting ring.
According to court documents released by OPB and CNN, the FBI alleged that Billups and other athletes acted as “face cards” in high-stakes poker games rigged with hidden X-ray cameras and altered shuffling machines. Prosecutors also suggest that a co-conspirator shared insider NBA information used to influence bets on a 2023 Blazers game.
The fallout has left the Trail Blazers scrambling to stabilize an already fragile fan base. Billups’ arrest came just days into the new season, forcing the organization to place him on immediate leave and elevate assistant coach Tiago Splitter into the interim role.
Interviews with Blazers supporters reveal a mix of shock, disappointment, and cautious optimism.
“I have been talking with friends, and I couldn’t think of an example of an active head coach getting arrested during a season,” said social studies teacher Ryan Inahara, a lifelong fan. “I don’t know if that’s ever happened. So this is definitely unprecedented.”
Concerns about the integrity of the NBA surfaced quickly. Some believe the scandal will have short-term effects on how the games are perceived, especially as sports gambling becomes easier and more widespread.
“I think over time every scandal kind of chips away at people,” said English teacher Naomi Kirchner, a loyal fan for years.
Others argue that the damage is limited and won’t permanently impact the Blazers unless similar issues reappear within the organization.
As the investigation moves toward trial, the Blazers find themselves waiting on federal proceedings, preparing for new ownership in the spring and attempting to keep their season from falling apart.
The world will see if this becomes a temporary distraction in their season or a turning point in franchise history. This doesn’t only depend on the verdict, but on how the Blazers choose to move forward.
