LHS girls volleyball has been setting up its season for success, winning their first two games against Ida B. Wells and Jefferson. Along with that, they beat one of LS’s biggest rivals, West Linn.
The team took on four additions this year: Mia Gold, Natalie Apodaca, Peyton Lowe and Sophia Carnese. Gold is the only freshman and she has been getting lots of minutes on the court, often starting.
“My start at LHS has been amazing,” said Gold. “Everyone is so kind on the team and I have felt super welcomed into the community.”
Team captains are an important part of a volleyball team’s dynamic. The team captains this year are seniors Olivia Olson and Jaslyn Reed. Reed is an outside hitter and Olsen is a middle blocker.
“I enjoy being able to support my team,” said Olsen. “ I take on the role of captain by working alongside my teammates to help make each one of them become better, inside and outside of the gym.”
On Sept. 30 LHS hosted the girls volleyball Mental Health game against Saint Mary’s. LHS won 3-2, moving LHS up the ranks. It was a close match, but it appeared the team had been putting in the work and showed up ready to play.
The volleyball Senior Night was on Oct. 21 against Oregon City. They lost to Oregon City 1-3 earlier in the season, but based on their current ranking it should be a close rematch. Seniors who will be honored include Kendall Jarman, Kylie Kennedy, Peyton Lowe, Jaslyn Reed, Olivia Olsen, Sophia Carnese and Mia Fitz-gerald.
The volleyball team next plays at St. Marys on Oct. 23. Game time is at 6:30.
