LHS closed campus policy is ineffective and outdated. It is a district-wide rule, meaning it has been put in place by LOSD and it applies to both LHS and LOHS. The goal of the policy is to protect student safety and keep them supervised during school hours.
Many students disregard this rule and leave at lunch anyway because they find a closed campus restricts their abilities to find food and have a good relaxing time at lunch.
”I would much rather spend my money at Starbucks than in the cafeteria,” said senior Claire Trinen.
Even some LHS staff and teachers understand the policy’s flaws especially in regards to student safety.
”I think having an open campus for lunch would create a safer environment for students who are leaving campus because they wouldn’t feel as rushed and as if they were sneaking off campus, trying to hide it,” said Nathan Smyly, campus security.
Some staff believe the open campus is a bad idea because 30 minutes is not enough time to get anywhere safely and make it back on time.
”The closed campus is a good idea because lunch is half an hour,” said Corey Fivecoat, administrative assistant. “You don’t have time to really get to the restaurants nearby and get back safely.”
Although lunch is short, there are multiple places that are under 10 minutes away that students are already getting to safely within the 30 minute time period: New Seasons, Starbucks and Wankers Country Store are just three options.
LHS students have been and are responsible enough for an open campus and it is time for LOSD to be open minded about the
idea of open campus.
