Turning a casual activity into a competitive sport, LHS’s coed bowling team is starting preparations for their upcoming season. With a roster of about 20 people, the bowling team is ready to split the competition.
The bowling team has high hopes for this upcoming season. Last year they placed 4th at districts–one place away from a state qualification–which they hope to achieve this season.
High school bowling works a little differently than normal, focusing more on the team score rather than the individual performance.
“We have it baker style,” said coach Sierra Avila. “So that’s where you do a lineup of five bowlers, and each bowler bowls two frames, so there’s strategy in doing a lineup.”
Sophomore Ash Carlson has been bowling competitively for almost two years now and watching the pins fall during a strike has been his favorite part. He dedicates his free time to the sport because of the coaches and the atmosphere.
“I’m really impressed with our team,” said Carlson. “Bowling is a fun way to get out there and do something.”
The bowling team practices twice a week on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Their average practice consists of hanging out and having a good time, but most importantly, getting those strikes. They have at least five competitions every year that are usually in a tournament style format.
Registration for the bowling team closes Jan. 3. If you are interested in joining make sure to talk with Coach Sierra or Liz Murphy at the athletic window.
