It seems that almost in an instant the lights in Shari’s Cafe and Pies across Oregon went out in 42 locations and for rent signs went up. Many families have spent time together at these cozily lit cafes.
Known for their pies and hexagonal buildings, Shari’s was open 24 hours a day was considered an Oregon mainstay. Throughout Oregon, they closed down with very little warning due to unpaid bills, taxes and eviction notices.
Additionally, local media report that Shari’s owes the Oregon Lottery nearly $1 million from their gambling machines.
Initially opening in 1978 in Hermiston, Oregon, Shari’s has locations in Washington, California and Idaho that remain open.
Mila Kaplan, senior, described the shut down as an “L.”
“I don’t know what kind of business practice they had to lead to the shut down,” she said. “That’s poor business management.”
Other students agree.
In addition to disappointed consumers, many employees of Shari’s in the Portland metro area felt blindsided. In the months leading up to the shut down, they were assured by their managers of their position security.
If you are an individual disappointed by the shut down of Shari’s, Biscuit’s Cafe is one alternative.
They don’t sell pies, but they specialize in meals for both breakfast and lunch.
