Respond to Racism, a non profit organization dedicated to confronting racial inequality within the community, will host a gala at Multnomah Arts Center on Dec. 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. This event will serve as both a fundraiser and an opportunity to spotlight the organization’s mission to shift conversation around racism from abstract discussions to concrete, community-driven action.
“We’re trying to move away from catering to white comfort and engage directly with the community. We want to plan events that actually help respond to racism and further our mission as a group,” said senior Chase Merrill, an organizer of the gala.
One key aspect of the gala will be the presentation of the Bruce R. Poinsett Award, which honors local individuals and organizations who have demonstrated anti-racist attitudes and programs.
In addition to the silent, live auction and catered meal, the gala will shine a spotlight on the role of youth in the movement for racial justice. The youth-led branch of Respond to Racism, the Youth Empowerment Coalition (YEC), has played a significant role in organizing the gala and ensuring youth are central to the conversation.
Merrill, who is involved in both the Respond to Racism Direct Action Board and YEC has emphasized the importance of youth involvement.
With the support of local organizations and community members, the gala aims to foster a greater sense of collective responsibility and action.
“The gala is about celebrating, it’s about recognizing the work of others, but also giving people the opportunity to get involved,” said Merrill. “We’re focused on taking action and creating real change.”
The event promises to be a powerful evening of community-building, collective action, and an important step forward in the fight against racism and discrimination.
