On Nov. 5, the 47th president was elected. Although not all LHS students can vote, advanced constitutional law (ACL) students planned a mock election for the student body. In social studies and senior English classes, students went to the rotunda and placed a ballot instead of a walk-and-talk.
‘We are seeing how we will stand in national elections,” said ACL student and junior Alexandra Grigore. “Lots of us don’t have a vote yet but when we do we should all be educated voters.”
“It is important for students at LHS to know how to cast ballots,” said Lindsey Lyons, junior and ACL student. “We need to know what voting is like and issues in both community and national politics.”
“We can talk about hard things while staying respectful and not result to insults,” said ACL teacher Janell Cinquini. “They designed the voters pamphlet working on using politically neutral language.”
ACL students also counted all of the ballots. With one ballot per LHS student, ACL students counted around 1200 ballots by hand.
The student body ended up voting vice president Kamala Harris for president, contrasting the national vote electing former president Donald Trump.
