Cheering louder than ever with 40 members, the LHS cheer team has been practicing nine hours a week to prepare for their game day season. Heading into another year with high expectations, this sizable team is working to meet their goals.
Last year was strong for them, winning first at game day state and fourth at traditional state, and they have already secured 12 awards at their National Cheer Association (NCA) camp this summer.
“My favorite part of the season has been going to NCA camp,” said freshman Macy Walkenhorst. The team attended the camp over the summer, learning new routines and stunts to use throughout the season.
The strong start is only pushing the team harder during their game day season at sidelines and competition practice.
Even though last year was strong; the team is already feeling better about this season.
“Our game day team feels much more spirited and we have more energy about games and assemblies,” said senior Lindsey Lyons.
This upward momentum will hopefully carry through to a first place at game day state and traditional in winter.
Not only are LHS cheerleaders learning stunts and routines, they are also gaining life skills.
“The biggest thing I’ve learned since being on varsity is that things change around a lot,” said Walkenhorst. “The best you can do is be adaptive and open to new ideas.” With high expectations and many things to learn, everyone should be watching out for what cheer will do this year.
