Are you sick of Google slideshows? Maybe, maybe not. Everyone has different opinions on how technology has impacted learning in the classroom.
Some enjoy using Apple pencils and TVs in math class, and others wish that teachers would use the massive whiteboards available to them. Because there are so many opinions floating around LHS relating to this topic, here is a brief overview of both sides.
The arguments in favor of technology in school often revolve around the simplicity of not having to carry around textbooks. All our resources can be found on our computers.
“I mean you have the internet, right? You have all the research you need at your fingertips,” said sophomore Kiefer Meyden. Because of their ease, the laptops have become very important to the education system.
“[Chromebooks] are a piece of technology that’s kind of evolved to be pivotal [to] teaching right now,” said Kiefer. “So I feel like if we got rid of them, it would mess up the learning atmosphere.”
Some who don’t appreciate technology will say that it makes it difficult to focus, becoming a distraction. There is also of course the fact that technology often leads to cheating. In fact, according to edqeek.org, some AI use was detected in about 1 out of 10 assignments, which isn’t surprising as how Anson Alexa, a site covering cell phone statistics, reports that 20% of students admit to searching the internet for answers during a test.
No matter whether you would prefer to have less technology in the classroom, Kiefer is right: technology has become an integral part of our educational environment, and it’s up to us whether or not we want to do something about it.
