With a new Culinary Arts teacher this school year, the students are experiencing a completely new class structure and setting. After the previous Culinary Arts teacher, Christine Rulli, retired, Jennifer Jillions has brought a new energy into the classroom.
“I think Culinary Arts is one class that’s just fun if you like cooking,” said senior Makayla Miller.
“I like the chill environment that the teacher provides and learning new things that I can make at home,” said junior Azurah Dailey. “My favorite recipe so far was blueberry muffins.”
Jillions has been loving her time at LHS so far and likes working with the students and her colleagues.
“It’s the best school district with the most gorgeous kitchen, and it’s everything that I love all rolled into the kids and the cooking,” said Jillions.
She builds up her classes by giving everyone a different role each class–head chef, sous chef, kitchen manager and a steward. She usually lets students do all of the work themselves, but is always there to help.
“I usually just tell them exactly what they need to know to build up on everything that we’ve learned in previous classes,” she said. “Sometimes I show a video or how to use the tool, and then I let them fly.”
In addition, there are many new traditions Jillions is looking forward to being brought into LHS. “I want to start a tradition where Culinary Arts 3 is an entrepreneurship class,” said Jillions. “So I want all the kids to build their own little fake restaurants and do their budget, their theme and their menu, and I want to have a community event where we have food cart wars.”
