Last year was monumental for Nintendo with the release of the Switch and two major titles, one of which being “Super Mario Odyssey.” Earlier in the year, fans were blown away by “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” giving it near perfect scores. Now, “Super Mario Odyssey” has taken the throne as a strong contender for Game of the Year.

Released on Oct. 27, fans have had more than enough time to experience the entirety of the game. Fortunately for fans and Nintendo alike, “Super Mario Odyssey” lived up to its tremendous hype for both children and adults.

One of the most appealing aspects of “Super Mario Odyssey” is the ability for the player to roam around each world at their leisure. Traditionally, many Mario games are very linear and have followed the same formula for decades. The open world of “Super Mario Odyssey” provides a much needed contrast to this formula that fans have had a chance to experience and enjoy.

Not only are the worlds open to explore, but each one has its own unique theme and art style that previous Mario games have lacked. When “Super Mario Odyssey” was initially revealed, fans were not sure what to expect as each of its bizarre settings have never been seen in previous Mario titles.

The story is solid, but nothing too groundbreaking. Though it follows the standard Mario versus Bowser formula, it does have some fresh ideas mixed in that tie directly into the theme of the game as well as the gameplay.

One of the best parts about “Super Mario Odyssey” is the gameplay. In the story, Mario finds himself with the power to possess objects with his hat, opening up a whole new world for unique gameplay mechanics. From possessing a T-Rex to bouncing on your own hat in midair, “Super Mario Odyssey” offers some of the best gameplay across all Nintendo games.

Overall, “Super Mario Odyssey” truly lived up to every last bit of its hype. Despite the silly, cartoonish appearance, the game is suitable for all audiences as Nintendo has put a tremendous amount of care into the making of this game. The game is available for purchase on the Nintendo Switch for $59.99.
