The Last Guardian
December 1, 2016
This year has been tremendously successful for major videogame franchises, but now it’s time for something new. This December, “The Last Guardian” will take the player on a journey through an abandoned castle in an attempt to escape captivity. However, the protagonist is not alone as he will befriend a giant creature that will aid him on his journey.
Leading the design of “The Last Guardian” is Fumito Ueda, lead designer of past critically acclaimed titles “Ico” and “Shadow of the Colossus.” Though it is launching in 2016, the game was actually announced and being developed way back in 2007 for the PlayStation 3. However, after a slow development, hardware issues and various complications within the development team, it began being developed by the genDESIGN and SIE Japan studios into what will be released on the PlayStation 4.
As these games tend to convey the story through actions rather than words, not much is known about the story. The length of the game is also unknown. However, from the trailers and information provided, the story appears to follow a boy who wakes up in an ancient castle after being mysteriously kidnapped. During his escape, the boy meets a massive four-legged bird-like creature named Trico. Together, the boy and Trico try to escape captivity, defeating their captors along the way. As in previous titles, the game will heavily emphasize on the relationship between the boy and Trico.
“The Last Guardian” is set to be an action/adventure puzzle game containing similar gameplay mechanics to the team’s past games “Ico” and “Shadow of the Colossus.” Their past games have been PlayStation exclusives and this one will be no different.
“The Last Guardian” will be published for the PlayStation 4 by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The game is set to be released on Dec. 6 and will be priced at $59.99 for the PlayStation 4.
