As the spring season reaches its peak, the LHS track and field team is showing that success goes far beyond medals and records—it’s about building a strong community grounded in leadership, support, and shared goals.
With the state championships set to start May 30, athletes across all events are doubling down on training and refining their focus. But for senior thrower Chase Merrill, the season’s most important goals aren’t measured in meters.
“My biggest goal this season is to try to be a leader and mentor to the other throwers and girls,” Merril said. “The goal this season is to help other people be the best they can be.”
That team-first mindset runs deep within the team. Whether competing in sprints, throws, jumps, or distance events, the athletes consistently uplift each other on and off the field.
“The team supports each other by always being there and cheering each other on,” said Merril. “We love to post funny videos kind of making fun of each other and bonding together on the Lakeridge throwers Instagram account.”
Distance runner Chloe Huyler echoed that spirit, recalling a special team moment.
“Winning the DMR with my team at Oregon Relays and running the state record in the 3000 meters,” said Chloe Huyler.
That’s not the only thing she’s won. Chloe is ranked No. 1 in the 1500m and 3000m, while her twin sister, Hannah, ranks No. 2 in the 3000m and she also qualified to run in the 1500m. Meanwhile, many other talented LHS track members have also made it to state, including Grace Peng, pole vault; Treyson Eddleman, shot put and discus; Leo Berger, discus, and Shanko Kornachuk, triple jump.
