Students in the Culinary Arts: Entrepreneurship class hosted the Food Cart Frenzy event at LHS cafeteria on May 21. The event was student run, featuring 12 different “food carts” that students planned and organized throughout the semester.
“All level three kids have been building their own business, and then they are going to stimulate them for all the community to come and try their food,” said family and consumer science teacher Jennifer Jillions.
Customers bought five-dollar tickets to buy one amuse-bouche (like an appetizer). People could try Philly cheesesteak, milkshakes, buffalo wings, crepes, and chips with guacamole.
“It’s supposed to be bringing in money and let us buy more stuff,” said senior Makayla Miller, who sold chips and guacamole with her group.
Jillions thought of this idea to let students practice while raising funds after visiting food carts around Portland, but the students have done most of the heavy lifting.
“They’ve done all the naming, the decorations, the budget, the ingredients, the recipes, and how they’re going to market it, everything you would put into your own little business if you’re going to open up your food cart,” said Jillions.
Some sponsors were Bellagios Pizza, Avanti, and Chuckie & Pies.
“We’ve had so many donations and sponsorships from local businesses that have given them the money for their ingredients to make the food, and watching them be so creative with what they want to sell and be excited about it,” said Jillions.
Jillions hopes to challenge LOHS chefs next year.
